COW 2011 6th Copenhagen Workshop on Endocrine Disrupters April 26-29, 2011 |
|
COW 2011 will be the sixth in the row of COW workshops on endocrine disrupters held every second year at the University Hospital of Copenhagen, Denmark. We look forward to welcome you to this recurrent event; regardless of whether this is your first time or whether you are a frequent attendee.
The field of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDC) is continuously expanding as scientific evidence of new health effects of xenobiotics appears. Whereas initial focus was on male reproduction, the concept of “multi-endocrine disrupters” have gained ground, reflecting the increased recognition, that also the thyroid gland, pancreas, the nervous system, breast tissue, the prostate and the female reproductive organs may be sensitive to EDC exposure. Related to this, “the foetal basis of adult disease” has become an increasingly used working hypothesis, turning focus towards the impact of EDC exposure during vulnerable stages of development. In addition, researchers make an effort to allow for the complex scenario of real-life exposure, both in animal experiments, in human studies, and in risk assessment strategies. In all, the research area of EDCs has become increasingly complex. Fortunately, this has been accompanied by the development of improved research tools and technologies, capable of handling such complex data.
The scientific programme of COW 2011 will reflect this continuous development of the research field. Internationally recognized experts within the areas of molecular biology, epidemiology, endocrinology, toxicology, human fertility and wildlife will share their newest results, and as a new thing this year, young researchers will, based on their poster abstracts, be selected to present new and interesting findings.
The overall aim of the workshop is to improve our understanding of the role of EDCs for human health, and to share results, information, doubts and ideas. We believe to have planned an extremely interesting scientific programme and look very much forward to welcome you to Copenhagen.
